UN:Me: An Psychological Horror That Blends Silent Hill and Social Deduction Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a young woman containing multiple human souls inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Within her exist four distinct personas, all possessing unique anxieties and drives. These souls can seize control at will, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Based on showcased footage, much of the action takes place within a eerie hospital, though additional clips depict the protagonist exploring a desolate church.
A World of Personal Horror
"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to others can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are specific to each person."
The core mechanic revolves around controlling whichever soul emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will switch involuntarily as you play. During exploration, every persona's fears become amplified and assault the girl one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Choice
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with orderlies who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the lobby have large flowers growing from their necks should be. Flowers are a recurring theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four personas claims that the body belongs to them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
After a player have deduced a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. But, because every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The last one standing might be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
