Our team is verifying images and video circulated this morning that purport to show the scene of a alleged car bomb blast that Russian officials say killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died to his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the location of where the pictures originated was based on posts indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building seen in the video.
Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the footage were captured.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
