The Tragic Transformation a Single Year Has Brought in the US

Twelve months back, the situation was entirely distinct. Ahead of the US presidential election, reflective citizens could admit America's deep flaws – its unfairness and disparity – however they still could identify it as the US. A free society. A land where legal governance held significance. A nation led by a dignified and ethical public servant, notwithstanding his elderly years and growing weakness.

Nowadays, this autumn, numerous citizens barely recognize the nation we reside in. Persons alleged as illegal immigrants are rounded up and forced into transport, occasionally refused legal rights. The left side of the “people’s house” – is being torn down to build a lavish ballroom. The leader is persecuting his political rivals or alleged foes and requesting federal prosecutors surrender a massive sum of public funds. Soldiers with weapons are dispatched across metropolitan centers under fabricated reasons. The military command, relabeled the War Department, has effectively rid itself of day-to-day journalistic scrutiny while it uses potentially totaling close to a trillion USD from citizen taxes. Colleges, attorney offices, journalism organizations are yielding due to presidential intimidation, and wealthy elites are regarded as nobility.

“The US, just months before its 250th birthday as the planet's foremost free society, has tipped over the edge into authoritarianism and extremism,” an American historian, commented in August. “Ultimately, more quickly than I imagined possible, it did happen here.”

One awakes to new horrors. And it is difficult to grasp – and agonizing to acknowledge – just how far gone we are, and the speed at which it occurred.

Yet, it is known that the leader was legitimately chosen. Despite his profoundly alarming initial presidency and despite the alerts associated with the knowledge of the conservative plan – even after the leader directly declared plainly he would be a dictator solely at the start – sufficient voters elected him over the other candidate.

As terrifying as today's circumstances is, it's more daunting to realize that we have only been several months under this leadership. How will another 36 months of this deterioration find us? And if that period becomes an prolonged era, because there is not anyone to stop this ruler from deciding that additional tenure is required, perhaps for national security reasons?

Granted, all is not lost. There are midterm elections in 2026 that could create a new political equilibrium, should Democrats recapture one or both houses of parliament. There exist public servants who are striving to impose certain responsibility, such as Democratic congressmen that are starting a probe regarding the effort to cash appropriation from legal authorities.

And a national vote in the next cycle could initiate the path to recovery just as last year’s election put us on this unfortunate course.

We see countless citizens demonstrating in the streets across municipalities, like they performed recently during anti-authority protests.

A former official, wrote recently that “the great sleeping giant of America is stirring”, exactly as before following the Red Scare in that decade or throughout anti-war demonstrations or throughout the Nixon controversy.

On those occasions, the unstable nation finally returned to balance.

He claims he recognizes the signs of that awakening and notices it unfolding now. As support, he references the large-scale demonstrations, the widespread, cross-party resistance to a television host's removal and the almost universal refusal by journalists to agree to military mandates they report only what is sanctioned.

“The sleeping giant consistently stays dormant before some venality becomes so noxious, an specific act so contemptuous of the common good, specific cruelty so disruptive, that the giant is forced other than to stir.”

It’s an optimistic take, and I appreciate Reich’s experienced view. Perhaps he will turn out correct.

In the meantime, the big questions endure: will the nation return to normalcy? Can it retrieve its position in the world and its adherence to legal principles?

Or do we need to admit that the historical project worked for a while, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed?

My negative thoughts suggests that the final scenario is true; that all may indeed be finished. My positive feelings, however, convinces me that we have to attempt, through all methods possible.

In my case, as a media critic, that means urging journalists to adhere, more fully, to their mission of scrutinizing authority. For some people, it might involve participating in election efforts, or coordinating protests, or developing approaches to safeguard voting rights.

Less than a year ago, we lived in a separate situation. A year from now? Or three years from now? The reality is, we are uncertain. Our sole course is to strive to not give up.
