New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point in his election bid.

A Traditional Abode

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors from the World War II era.

However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core platform, was not quick to announce his residency plans immediately after his electoral win in November.

"My choice came down to our family's safety and the importance of directing all of my focus on implementing the affordability agenda voters voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community known for its diverse immigrant communities and global cuisine.

"To the people of Astoria: thank you for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," he noted.

"Even though I'm moving there, the community will continue to reside within me and my work," he affirmed.

Campaign Controversy

Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his opponents, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the apartment despite the fact that he came from a well-known family.

A House Not Always Used

Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his private home on the Upper East Side for his time in office, which concluded in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a space for civic gatherings, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment far removed from his modest Astoria digs.

Featuring pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.

Within, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed consistent with the home's historical period.

The property, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

His former home is under rent control, a policy where the city regulates on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.

City residents consider these apartments crucial resources as the cost of housing outpaces the means of many residents.

Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
