The Manager Enzo Maresca Labels Lead-Up Time as The 'Toughest 48 Hours' at the Club
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca stated that the preparation to the weekend's victory against Everton represented "the most challenging 48 hours" of his tenure at Stamford Bridge.
The 44-year-old made a rather mysterious comment in his post-match interview even after notching a 2-0 win at home through strikes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.
Those points lifted Chelsea back into the Premier League's top four, potentially lightening the atmosphere following a loss to Atalanta in the Champions League that had extended the side's winless run to consecutive matches.
However, when asked about Gusto's contribution and overall display, Maresca surprisingly disclosed his annoyance over the previous 48-hour period at the club.
"The way the players want to improve has been excellent and this is the explanation why I praise them - because with numerous challenges, they are doing very well after a difficult week," he commented.
"From the moment I arrived at the club, the previous 48 hours have been the toughest because several people failed to back us."
Pressed on his meaning, the former Leicester City manager continued: "Worst 48 hours since I joined the club because people didn't support me and the team."
When asked if he meant people within at Chelsea, he replied: "Broadly speaking. Overall," before specifying when queried if it was directed towards fans or the press: "I adore the fans and we are extremely content with the fans."
Fitness & Disciplinary Crisis
Maresca also pointed to Chelsea's ongoing fitness and disciplinary issues, remarking they had been missing key forward Cole Palmer for a large portion of the campaign, as well as losing linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-game ban and forward Liam Delap to two significant injuries.
"I truly applaud the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, five of them minus Moises Caicedo, 11 of them minus Cole Palmer, almost all of them minus Liam Delap," he explained.
"And this squad, regardless of who is on the pitch, they are performing exceptionally. Today was five games in 12 days so undoubtedly when you see Cole Palmer there, we said many times that he's our finest player but we play the vast majority of the season without our top player.
"We play 5 games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the explanation why I'm so delighted for the players and it's something that I would like people externally to appreciate because the effort from the players is remarkable."
Chelsea's triumph over Everton cemented their position in fourth in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup quarter-final tie at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle to come next week.
Uncertainty Over Maresca's Remark
It was ambiguous who or what prompted Maresca to label the previous 48 hours as the most difficult of his spell as Chelsea head coach.
In that timeframe, the coach had returned with his staff and players from his native Italy, conducted a session at the training ground, faced a pre-match press briefing where he appeared relaxed, and secured a victory over an high-flying Everton side.
It was unclear whether any particular media reports had unsettled him, if social media discourse were a factor, or if it was something more significant from inside the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca only sought to deny that it was an issue involving the club's supporters, a section of which have not yet fully warm to him since his appointment from Leicester in July 2024.
