The Details Known Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 people lost their lives and more than 40 sustained injuries when attackers shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have stated the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were transported to medical facilities.

Those who died are yet to be formally identified, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the individuals who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the events before the attack, explaining they were standing when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with several in a critical state. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
