Russell Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Comments
New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this week, reacting to recent criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated on X. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."
Wilson's remarks pointed to the notorious Bounty Gate issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the Saints.
During that period, the NFL found that the Saints had incentivized players for delivering aggressive tackles on rival teams. As a result, Payton was suspended from the league for a full year.
What Sparked the Recent Dispute
Wilson's reaction came after Payton made remarks following the Broncos' remarkable 33-32 victory over the Giants. The coach suggested that the team had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the first-string QB.
Moreover, Payton implied that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson over Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We were hoping that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" Payton stated.
Context of the Wilson-Payton Partnership
- The quarterback joined the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and inked a 5-year, $245M extension.
- The Broncos went 4-11 in his debut year prior to the team hired Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a period in TV commentary.
- Payton replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a move that prevented the player from suffering an injury.
Had Wilson stayed on the team by March 2024, his $37 million pay for the following year would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, marking the ugly split between the quarterback and his coach.
