Former Treasury Secretary Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors

Board Resignation
The former official declared he would retreat from public roles after Congressional panel made public his frequent correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein

Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is leaving the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a batch of emails between him and deceased financier the accused trafficker became public.

He commented in a statement that he was "appreciative for the opportunity to have participated, excited about the promise of the company, and eagerly await following their progress".

Summers, who previously led the prestigious university, declared on Monday that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his connections with Epstein.

Email Communications

The newly public communications showed that Summers communicated with the financier until the day before the financier's 2019 apprehension for accused sex trafficking of young people.

In a separate statement, the AI firm said it understood his determination to resign.

"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he offered to the Board," OpenAI stated.

Political Context

This news arrives after the two houses of the legislative branch agreed on this week to pass a measure that would compel the US justice department to disclose its records on Jeffrey Epstein.

The bill will then head to the office of US President Donald Trump for approval. He has indicated he intends to endorse the measure, after modifying his view on the matter following pushback from his base.

Correspondence Findings

A group of financier-linked correspondence released by the Congressional committee days ago included several well-known personalities in the billionaire's previous network, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those people.

The emails showed that the professor and the financier dined together frequently, with the billionaire often trying to connect Summers to notable international personalities.

Personal Response

After the messages were made available with the general audience, the former official stated he accepted "full responsibility for my poor decision to maintain interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".

He further stated that he desired "to reestablish confidence and mend connections with the people most important to me".

Career Background

The economist occupied leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; functioning as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the economic advisory body under President Obama.

He led Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and remains a professor there. When stating his withdrawal from public duties earlier on Monday, he indicated he would maintain his academic responsibilities.

Further Repercussions

Following the economist's declaration on earlier this week, the policy organization, a left-leaning policy institute in DC where Summers was a senior fellow, announced that Summers was ceased to be affiliated with the institution.

The former official joined the directorate of OpenAI, which creates the language model, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to oust its CEO OpenAI's head.
