Eurovision Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Transformed Into a Calculated Tool to Sanitize Conflict.

A freshly coined term surfaced a few months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it means “Injured child with no living relatives”. This term is specific to Gaza, per insights from health professionals including child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is unusual for physicians to treat a young patient who has been bereaved of their entire family. But, there has been nothing “normal” regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been wiped out and the number of child amputees surpasses that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing ordinary about many doctors returning from a landscape of rubble with reports of children being systematically aimed at.

A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Supposed Ceasefire

Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Essential medical supplies are not getting in those in need, and international watchdogs have stated that atrocities are ongoing. Officials has denied these claims, consistent with how it denies each claim it is implicated in. But while grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in improvised encampments, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from advancing its declared purpose of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, although several European countries have now pulled out in protest. Since this, it seems, is what global togetherness manifests as.

Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be completely different.

A Double Standard

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for irregular participation methods last year in what could be seen as an effort to inject politics into Eurovision. Ignore the report that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Pay no mind to the evidence that aggression from Israeli settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Disregard the condition that international journalists are still blocked from freely reporting in Gaza. None of this, it would seem, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Staggering Tragedy

The contest marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the projected longevity of someone in Gaza today. The event will proceed, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the camp joy it once represented. An institution that initially championed togetherness has transformed into a blatant mechanism to sanitize military aggression.
