Biden Bowl, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Sell International Gifts for Good Cause

Relinquishing unwanted offerings can be seen as slightly impolite – except if it's done the right way.

A Philanthropic Auction

Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, will offload around 270 items bestowed upon her by foreign dignitaries during her travels. The diverse haul is said to contain items such as a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.

These items, together, are valued at around €800,000. The plan is to sold in a public auction by a Rome-based fine art auction house. The specific date has not been finalized, although the aim is to hold the auction before Christmas, with the proceeds going to non-profit organizations.

The presents reportedly locked away in a secure area on the upper level of the government headquarters. It has been reported that Meloni additionally planning to auction off gifts received by her preceding prime ministers that have been stored away indefinitely.

The detailed catalog has not yet been made public, but some insight were revealed earlier this year when a detailed register of all declared gifts was reviewed by officials. The question centered on if a legal value limit was being honored. Legally, a prime minister cannot take home presents valued above €300.

An International Array of Gifts

The collection includes:

  • A scarf from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A traditional Kerala dress from the Indian leader.
  • A box of jewellery from the Slovakian president.
  • A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from the Hungarian prime minister.
  • A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
  • A tablet from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Paintings from Moldova.
  • An assortment including makeup, a board, and several rugs from trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Maybe the oddest gifts included the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," reports suggest.

Diplomatic Backdrop

Supporters have applauded Meloni, particularly from within her party, with building relationships with foreign leaders and re-establishing Italy as a prominent force on the world stage once again.

This unique auction symbolizes a novel approach to manage the diplomatic artifacts that are collected during a time in office.
