Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, Adult Swim welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's sincerity found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and supported its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about observing this charming family navigate their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running layer of irony. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to enjoy the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
