Aaron Rai Secures the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Playoff Battle Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
Aaron Rai displayed remarkable nerve to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the final day, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic playoff following a topsy-turvy final round of competition.
Rai sank a decisive birdie from just over eight feet to seal the win, echoing his only previous tournament success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a playoff victory against Fleetwood.
Final Round Excitement
The champion entered the final round with a one-shot lead over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, five-under final round that featured seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
The challenger edged one shot clear with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the final green.
Play-Off Decider
That led to a play-off at Yas Links where Rai triumphed to claim the title and $1.5m (£1.13m) in prize money.

It is amazing to be holding the trophy.”
Notable Performances
The Northern Irish star left himself just too much to make up, finishing one shot short in a shared third place with the Dane, after a stunning 10-under final round of 62. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever round on the European Tour, including eight birdies and an eagle.
Højgaard fired six birdies of his as well, but his hopes of topping the standings were hit by a bogey on the 12th. English golfer Mansell produced an excellent last round seven-under to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
