No less than 64 people lost their lives in a law enforcement action cracking down on the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the most extensive and fatal action in the region's history.
Four police officers were among those killed during the police action in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, state officials said. More than 80 people were detained.
Violent conflicts commenced when approximately 2,500 security personnel entered the area on Tuesday morning. The criminal organization countered with gunfire, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, police representatives said.
The United Nations human rights body stated it felt "horrified" by the security action, calling for "prompt and effective investigations".

State officials confirmed a minimum of 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
